Lori Patton Davis, PhD, Chair, Department of Educational Studies, The Ohio State University | Presenter Bio
Often responsible for facilitating postsecondary and organizational research efforts, research development professionals (RDPs) can play a critical role in promoting equity and antiracism within research platforms. However, doing so requires reflection, knowledge, and action to unpack racist and other oppressive ideologies. In this session, Dr. Lori Patton Davis will provide information to engage participants in working toward racially just, anti-oppressive practices to improve their work and contribute to the research enterprise.
11:45 – 1:00 p.m. - Lunch & Networking (on your own)
1:15 – 2:45 p.m. - Conversation Roadblocks: Our Journey to Racial and Social Justice
Gretchen Kiser, PhD, Executive Director, Research Development Office, University of California San Francisco
Etta Ward, MA, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Development, Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis
Racial and social justice conversations are difficult to have for many complicated reasons. Sometimes, certain conversation roadblocks, like our own personal biases, fear of what others will think/say, denial that there is a problem and overall discomfort can keep us from just starting these difficult conversations. As research development professionals and leaders, it is important to have such conversations in order to make deeper connections that lead to more meaningful collaborations with others.
Join us in a facilitated and open discussion, to identify and discuss our own roadblocks and how to surmount them. Critical dialogues like this allow us all to be part of a national and global effort to promote racial and social justice and affect positive change throughout our communities.
