IU Policies and Procedures
Policies and procedures
IU supports technology commercialization through a broad range of policies. These policies are intended to facilitate investment of additional resources and to support faculty engagement in this time and capital-intensive activity.
- Intellectual Property Policy:
- Inventions and Patents (UA-24): The University owns all patentable intellectual property created by University employees in the course of their employment and/or created by individuals, including employees, students, post-doctoral or other fellows, using University resources.
- Copyrightable Works (UA-23): This policy addresses Copyrightable Intellectual Property owned by the University, Copyrightable Intellectual Property owned by the Creator(s), and Copyrightable Intellectual Property owned by the Creator(s) and assigned back to the University.
- Conflicts of Interest and Commitment: Academic appointees may spend, on average, one non-weekend day each week, on outside professional activities.

Conflicts of interest, and how to manage them
Engagement of faculty with private enterprises to commercialize their technology has a potential to lead to conflict of interest and commitment issues for faculty and IU. To ensure that any such potential conflict is identified and managed to protect faculty, student and institutional concerns, IU has established a Conflict of Interest Management process.
