Submissions to the IRB
Submitting a human subjects study for review
Kuali Protocols is the online IRB submission system used at Indiana University for submitting human subjects research to the IRB for review.
Research projects involving the use of humans as subjects at Indiana University or its affiliated institutions must be reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Submitting your study, or protocol, for review by the IRB takes planning and preparation.
The links below will help you understand the process for submitting a new protocol, amending or renewing an existing protocol, closing a study, and reporting events that may occur during the conduct of your study. You can also find information regarding how to proceed if your project will be reviewed by an IRB outside IU.
Kuali Protocols
Kuali Protocols is a cloud-based online IRB submission system. All human subjects research submissions, and changes to existing IRB protocols, are submitted to the IRB for review via Kuali Protocols. IU’s HRPP and the IU IRBs also use Kuali Protocols to manage and review human subjects research submissions. You will need to use Kuali Protocols if:
- You are the principal investigator for a research study using human subjects.
- You are creating and/or submitting your own IRB submission or you are creating and submitting on behalf of another investigator.
- You need to view study approval dates, approved study documents, or other information for a particular research study or group of studies.
If you need access to Kuali Protocols and you do not already have an IU computing account, you will need to have an IU faculty or staff member sponsor one for you. If you are collaborating with an IU researcher or research team, you should request them to sponsor your affiliate account. If you need assistance, please contact the HRPP at irb@iu.edu.
