The Department of Defense Biguans (DOD Bìguāns) Funding Program supports individuals and multi-disciplinary teams to write and submit proposals to the Department of Defense. PI's may target any DoD funding mechanism and are encouraged to consider the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) which supports projects focused on research that extends beyond the warfighter, military, and veteran populations.

In Spring 2024, IU Bloomington will host two intensive, one-week grant-writing retreats, centered on the Department of Defense. The School of Public Health – Bloomington has for several years hosted intensive writing retreats for small groups of well-prepared faculty under the name bìguān. This is a Chinese term that, though the exact definition is debated, scholars all agree centers on the concept of eliminating outside distractions to allow for hushed, dedicated focus. With great respect for this ancient tradition, we have integrated this practice into our work today.

For two separate one-week sessions in Spring 2024, teams of IU researchers will be invited to participate in one of these special retreats in which dedicated space and as-close-to-ideal conditions for grant proposal preparation will be provided. Experts in grantsmanship and the Department of Defense will be on site to provide consultation, alongside statisticians, grants administrative staff, graphic design assistance, and IT support. Refreshments and meals will be provided so that every day, each team can fully focus on their research proposals, with the goal of each having a solid, nearly complete draft of their proposal by the end of the week.

As mentioned, this event will focus on Department of Defense funding. Note that one particular opportunity that covers many topic areas, the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP), will have multiple letter of intent and pre-proposal deadlines in late March and April, followed by full application deadlines from late April through May and July.
