IU Research Honors

IU Research Honors: A Celebration of Faculty Excellence

Vice President for Research Russell Mumper (a 2021 Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors] leads a panel discussion with distinguished IU faculty on research excellence.

On March 24, 2026, we gathered for an evening celebrating Indiana University faculty who had earned significant recognition for their research and creative activity since 2020. Those recognized received awards identified by the National Research Council as among the most prestigious in their fields, as well as other select national and international honors. These accolades spanned a broad range of disciplines and career stages, from publication awards to lifetime achievement honors.

The centerpiece of the event was a panel discussion led by Vice President for Research Russell Mumper, who invited four distinguished professors from across the university to join in a conversation reflecting on the excellence of their research and creative output. Vice President Mumper was joined by:

  • Dr. Chandy John, Distinguished and Ryan White Professor of Pediatrics and member the National Academy of Medicine (2025);
  • Dr. Bernice Pescosolido, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and member of the National Academies of Medicine (2016) and Sciences (2021);
  • Marietta Simpson, Distinguished Professor of Music and member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2019); and
  • Dr. Rich Shiffrin, Distinguished and Luther Dana Water Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences and member of the National Academy of Sciences (1995), the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (1996), and the American Philosophical Society (2005).

Each panelist shared insights into their careers, speaking about the importance of their parents’ emphasis on education, what keeps them motivated, and sharing advice they give to their students at the beginning of their own careers in research.

Whether these accolades reflect the culmination of decades of transformative work or mark a trajectory of continued influence in mid-career, they represent lives of inquiry defined by curiosity and rigor. In every case, this is work judged by peers to be consequential and enduring.

— President Pamela Whitten
