To continue advancing Indiana University's commitment to international scholarship and research and to securing the research environment from malign actors, IU has implemented Policy RP-11-012, Research Security. Effective October 1, 2025, this policy strengthens IU’s ability to safeguard research and intellectual property while ensuring compliance with federal and state requirements.
Applicability
The policy applies to all:
- Students
- Faculty
- Staff and other employees of Indiana University
- Any person conducting research or sponsored activity under the auspices of the University
Key Requirements
Training & Disclosures
- Required Training: All Senior or Key Personnel on federal funding applications must complete the mandatory Research Security Training annually (or more frequently if required by the funding agency).
- Complete Disclosures: When submitting applications or reports to IU or external funding agencies, such documentation must be complete, accurate and in compliance with funding agency requirements. This includes all resources supporting your research, regardless of their value or whether or not based at IU.
- Documentation re: Foreign Activities, etc. Disclosers must maintain and provide to the University copies of contracts, grants or any other agreements specific to foreign activities, resources or appointments involving foreign entities, employment with a foreign institution, participation in a foreign talent recruitment program and other information reported as Current and Pending (Other) Support on funding applications.
Prohibited Activities & Approvals
- Prohibited Activities: The policy outlines specific activities that are prohibited, such as participation in Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Programs (MFTRPs), Foreign Recruitment Programs by Foreign Adversary Countries and engagement with/use of IU resources to support Foreign Terrorist Organizations or State Sponsors of Terror.
- Required Approvals: Certain activities require advance approval, including agreements with Foreign Entities of Concern and transferring Sensitive Research Materials to or from Foreign Entities of Concern. The policy also requires a written agreement for any transfer of Sensitive Research Materials to or from a Foreign Entity of Concern.
