Introduction to Pivot
Pivot (formerly COS) Homepage

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research at IU Bloomington and the IUPUI Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research are pleased to announce the availability of Pivot (formerly COS), a comprehensive, editorially maintained database of funding opportunities combined with a unique database of 3 million pre-populated scholar profiles. Pivot's proprietary algorithm compiles pre-populated researcher profiles unique to Indiana University and matches them to current funding opportunities in the expansive COS Pivot database. This allows users to search for a funding opportunity and instantly view matching faculty from inside or outside IU.

  • REGISTER to use Pivot. Create a profile to take full advantage of Pivot.
  • EXPLORE Profiles. Pivot provides profiles of millions of faculty and other scholars worldwide. Pivot will match profiles with suggested funding opportunities and with potential collaborators at IU and at other institutions.
  • SEARCH Funding Opportunities. The Quick Search is an easy way to search across all available funding opportunities. Searching for funding across all fields provides broad search results. The Advanced Search constructs a targeted, field-specific search using search boxes, browsing windows, and pick lists. (See below for more on using Pivot to find funding.)
  • TRACK opportunities and SAVE searches. Track individual funding opportunities by adding them to a list of either active or tracked funding opportunities. Save search queries to quickly review newly added or updated opportunities by re-running the saved search, or use it as a starting point to create a similar search. Manage saved searches or tracked and active funding opportunities on the Pivot homepage.
  • RECEIVE Funding Alerts. Choose to receive an email alert for a saved search query, and Pivot will automatically provide a weekly funding alert that identifies any newly added or updated opportunities. Or, choose to receive only one email each week compiling all new results for each search and individual opportunity.
  • SHARE searches and opportunities. Share individual funding opportunities as well as saved search queries with colleagues. See shared opportunities on the personalized Pivot homepage.

More on Finding Funding through Pivot

Simple and Advanced searches can be used to locate grant sources that match criteria such as keywords, level of expertise, citizenship, research location, or type of funding. Searching by sponsor searches the entire sponsor list or allows you to browse the sponsor list alphabetically. If search results are too broad, search results can be refined. The Advanced Search constructs a targeted, field-specific search using search boxes, browsing windows, and pick lists. Enter information in only the fields to be searched. Adding information to more fields will result in narrower search results. Fields available are described in detail in Field Descriptions.

Tips on searching:

  • To search for all words starting with a specific set of letters, use an asterisk. Example: Geo* for all words starting with “geo,” such as geology, geography, etc.
  • Searching for funding across all fields provides broad search results. Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT can be used within the text search box. Example: pediatric AND cancer. Quotations can also be used for exact phrase searching. Example: “apple juice” for the phrase apple juice.
  • To list the funding opportunity search results by “Deadline” or by “Amount,” click on the column name.
  • Faceted search – use the categories on the left menu to see only the results in that category. For example, click “Federal, U.S.” for only opportunities in your results from federal sponsors.
  • Unspecified deadlines are past programs that do not have current application deadlines.
