Indiana University established the Center in 1972, with a major gift from the late Nelson Poynter. The Poynter Center has directed its attention to the entire spectrum of American political and social institutions. The Center's projects have drawn on the fullest resources of the university and have cut across the traditional boundaries of curriculum and discipline. Areas of interest include the following: ethics and the professions, medical ethics, health and human values, research ethics, trusteeship, religion and ethics, and the teaching of ethics.
