Indiana University

  1. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) maintains a register of approved non-instructional research and service units at Indiana University. This register is available at http://www.research.iu.edu/centers/alphaindex.html and includes a general description as well as contact information for the unit.
  2. Presence on the approved list is a prerequisite to listing in the telephone directory, printing of stationery, mention in the University catalog, or any representation of the existence of such a unit to external organizations for potential funding or other activity.
  3. An application form for the establishment of a new unit may be obtained from the Office of the Vice Provost for Research or by downloading the online application form:
PDF Format (.pdf) Rich Text Format (.rtf)
  4. When submitted, such requests will be considered promptly.

    1. Requests recommended for positive action will be forwarded to the University Center Advisory Committee.
    2. Unless rejected at this level, the request will be forwarded to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs for discussion at the Academic Officers' Committee.
    3. Next, the request is reviewed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
    4. If approved, it will be forwarded to the President's staff.
    5. Final approval will be granted by the Board of Trustees.
  5. Such units will be internally reviewed by the relevant oversight office after the third year of establishment. Thereafter an external and internal review will be conducted every five years to determine continuation on the approved list. In preparation for this review, the director will be given an opportunity to revise the pertinent material concerning the current status of the unit and to request its continuation. Appeal may be made of a decision to terminate. If not granted by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, the appeal will be referred for definitive action to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  6. It is understood explicitly that general fund financial support is not implied by the presence of such a unit on the approved list. Approval of the unit is, however, a prerequisite for any such funding. Such an approval by itself constitutes no financial commitment on the part of the University for future funding.
  7. This policy is not intended to apply to instructional programs. A corresponding register of instructional programs is maintained by the Office of the Dean of Faculties and Academic Affairs.
