Founded in 1974, the African American Arts Institute (AAAI) is a multi-faceted arts program operating under the Office of the Vice President for Institutional Development and Student Affairs. The AAAI mission is to preserve and promote African American culture through research, creative activity, education, performance, and outreach. In fulfillment of its mission the Institute engages in the following activities:

  1. research projects leading to the development of information resources and instructional materials;
  2. creation of new works in music and dance;
  3. performance of art works representative of African American culture as well as other cultures of the African diaspora;
  4. creation of opportunities for people of all ages, and various social, philosophical, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds to experience African American art forms;
  5. promotion of ensembles in three areas of the performing arts: sacred and secular choral music (African American Choral Ensemble), dance (African American Dance Company), and contemporary urban black popular music.
